Overview of the q4 district, previously called schriksel, on a map of venlo by j. Blaeu, 1652. On the left in the picture at the intersection of the maasschiksel and the helschiksel, the sint-jacobsgasthuis is shown as st. Iacobs gasthuys near a church building. Sef derkx (2017) provided the following summary: the sint-jacobsgasthuis [was] built between 1533 and 1539. Originally, the guesthouse served as a shelter for citizens who were affected by poverty and had no roof over their heads. Later, elderly gentlemen were cared for. In 1799, venlo was then a french city, it was mentioned as maison de vieillards. In the early nineteenth century the hospital was located here. Between in 1830 and 1832, venlo residents without work and income were forced to work there. " (source)
