The st. Ignatius mission on mission creek near present-day st. Ignatius, montana, in the united states in 1862. Gustavus sohon, artist. The mission was originally located near cussick, washington territory. But that area proved infertile and prone to floods, so in 1854 father pierre-jean de smet and father adrian hoecken moved the mission further into the bitterroot mountains of modern-day montana and re-established the mission at mission creek. Few of the buildings depicted here survived. The site and newer buildings were added to the u. S. National register of historic places on june 19, 1973. Date: 1862.
