Dish with Hercules and Omphale, Francesco Xanto Avelli

Dish with Hercules and Omphale, Francesco Xanto Avelli

This dish shows hercules, who loved omphale, queen of lydia. She made him shed his military trappings for more feminine accessories, like the distaff for spinning that he holds here. The latin inscription translates as "love conquers all. " an inscription on the back wrongly identifies omphale as hercules's wife, deianira. Inscriptions were often applied by an assistant unfamiliar with the scene. Date: between circa 1528 and circa 1530 (Renaissance). Place of creation: Gubbio, Italy (?). Dimensions: 5.9 × 27.1 cm (2.3 × 10.6 in). Medium: earthenware. Collection: Walters Art Museum. Francesco Xanto Avelli - Dish with Hercules and Omphale - Walters 481344
