This vessel started life in 1831 at the yard of john wood & co. In port glasgow, where it was launched in late 1831 and named john wood. Operated by the city of glasgow steam packet company, glasgow. In 1840 it was sold to a partnership in the duchy of holstein (then a part of denmark) and named christian viii in honour of the danish king. In 1848 the ship was sold to the insurgents of schleswig-holstein and joined their navy as the bonin. The peace settlement required it to be handed over to the royal danish navy in 1852, where it became the mercur.
