Scenic vellum Vase, 1909, Edward Timothy Hurley

White clay body, thrown. Ovoid body with a gradual taper from shoulder to rim, thick lip; no foot. Decorated with tall slender trees and branches. Underbrush covering lower third of body and tree foliage filling third to lip. Trees and foliage in dark brown underglazed slip against ivory background. Interior is greenish-white, glazed. Allover vellum glaze, crackled. Bottom glazed. Date: 1909. Dimensions: H x Diam: 32.4 x 15.2 cm (12 3/4 x 6 in.). Medium: glazed stoneware. Collection: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
