letter - the metamorphoses of the day n°65
letter - you see, glaude, suppose you would usually be a corporal, or a minister, whatever! that if you were stupid, we would metaphorize you with the head of a pickle. Mom ! are there any men who have faces like that?
inscription - lith. By langlumé
registration - at bulla, rue st jacques n°38, and at martinet, rue du coq. Iconographic description:
two soldiers and a mother with her son look in a window at colorful prints representing amusing little scenes where humans have animal heads. These four spectators who wonder about the images shown to them also have animal faces (bird for a soldier and horse for the mother). Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "the modern parade has the pencil and the pen, it makes man see and it explains him, it makes him speak and it makes him walk. A simple caricature exhibited on the place de la bourse produces more effect in one day than all the farces that turlupin or gauthier garguille have told on the pont-neuf during their entire lives. If you don't attend the print dealer's parade every day, don't talk about the morals, prejudices, or opinions of france; you cannot know them. "
