iconographic description:
the scene takes place in the theater. On the stage, a troupe of actors, depicted with monkey heads, are enacting a classic drama. They are dressed in ancient-inspired togas and armor. One of them declaims with strong gestures. On the right, in the proscenium dressing room, three gentlemen lean towards the actor. All three of them have snake heads. One whistles, another holds a key. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "far from taking tragedy seriously, we sometimes even allow ourselves to laugh in the face of the fiery achilles and to whistle at agamemnon, the king of kings! a society which no longer believes in anything, not even tragic dreams, is on the verge of its ruin. This reflection is not mine, it is from a regular at the odeon; because whatever the bad jokers say, the odeon has a regular. "
