The ship portrait shows the steamer accompanied by the pilot schooner "elbe" 3 with several flags, including the r for the shipping company, which is also the chimney mark, and the flags of germany, the usa and hamburg. The early tanker sails for the still relatively young shipping company "deutsch-amerikanische petroleum-gesellschaft" in hamburg (later esso), founded by wilhelm anton riedemann (1832-1920), whose first tank steamers were already operating in the 1880s. As pennsilvannia or pensilvania, the ship sailed from 1924/28 for an italian shipping company from genoa. Severely damaged by british aircraft in 1941 off mogadisho, only scrapping. See auke visser's german esso tanker's site. Object Type: painting. Date: 1903. Dimensions: height: 78 cm (30.7 in); width: 150 cm (59 in). Medium: oil on canvas.
