Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni, Domenico Ghirlandaio, between 1489 and 1490

Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni, Domenico Ghirlandaio, between 1489 and 1490

Giovanna albizi tornabuoni, wife of the son of an important nobleman at the court of lorenzo the magnificent, is portrayed in strict profile, a classic typology recovered by the italian quattroccento of commemorative coins and medals. It is thought that it was commissioned by her husband to preserve the beauty and memory of his wife with this image after her death in childbirth. Completely effective in the placement of a sideboard behind the figure, which manages to create a certain perspective with the lines of flight and the objects. The great realism applied to the hairstyle, facial features, and brocade clothing accentuates the somewhat idealized beauty of a portrait that also refers to the human qualities of the person represented. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: between 1489 and 1490. Dimensions: height: 77 cm (30.3 in) ; width: 49 cm (19.2 in). Medium: mixed media on panel.
