Valentin Bousch The Deluge 1531 Met Museum

"the deluge" by valentin bousch, french, 1531. Medium: glass, painted and stained. Dimensions: 11 ft. 10 1/4 in. X 5 ft. 7 in. (3. 61 x 1. 7 m). Credit line: joseph pulitzer bequest, 1917. Accession number: 17. 40. 2a–r. Metropolitan museum of art. This window, together with moses presenting the tablets of the law (also in the museum's collection) and five others, decorated the choir of the benedictine priory church of saint-firmin in flavigny-sur-moselle, lorraine. It was commissioned by the prior, wary de lucy. Bousch rejected traditional compartmentalization and instead treated each composition like an enormous painted or carved retable within a trompe-l'oeil architectural frame.
