historical commentary:
"the court embroiderer (pierre vallet) and the royal gardener (jean robin) of henry iii of france got together and published a really interesting book of designs in 1608, _le jardin du roi_. The style was moving toward more naturalistic flowers and vallet was interested in botany, so the plates look very much like botanical prints. Although they were published in monochrome, detailed descriptions of the color are included in the front of the book there are also bees and butterflies included. Modelbuch muse (september 22, 2018). [14] pp. , title engraved with the full-length statues of clusius and the obel on either side of an immense porch opening onto a view of the monumental gardens and greenhouses of marie de médicis, 2 portraits of pierre vallet and jean robin, herbalist of the king. Flowers including many exotic ones. The “jardin du roy” is a tribute to marie de medici (1575-1642), queen of france through her marriage to henri iv, passionate about gardens and botany. Pierre vallet was appointed ordinary embroiderer to the king at the court of henri iv and later valet to the king; he met jean robin (1550-1629), the most famous botanist of his time, who directed the royal gardens of the louvre under henri iii, henri iv and louis xiii; they collaborated on several works, including the history of aromatic plants (1619) and le jardin du roy. This book is the first important work of floral botany, with plants from spain and the guinea coast and other rare exotic plants. This collection was intended to provide a catalog of motifs to painters, embroiderers and upholsterers of the kingdom. 2nd edition: jardin du roy très chrestien louis 13 (1623)
