View through to st martin in the fields from pall mall east, newly opened up in 1828 as part of the clearance that would lead to the creation of trafalgar square. To the left are the stables of the king's mews, rebuilt in 1732 to designs by william kent, which had previously faced onto a large closed exercise yard. (cf 1793 view and survey of london, vol 20, plate 4). By the early 19th century the buildings were being used "for the storage of public records and even, for a time, as a menagerie". [1]. They would soon be demolished to make way for the national gallery. In the foreground to the right is the entrance portico to the royal college of physicians, built 1824–27, now part of canada house.
