Harris was the first to illustrate and describe this species, but wrongly identified it as libellula forcipata (now onychogomphys forcipatus), a different species which linnaeus had described. Harris guessed the eye colour as blue; living specimens have green eyes, dried specimens brown. Date: 1766.
