iconographic description:
a bald old man is sitting in an armchair. Two young children are playing around him: a little girl climbs on his shoulders and a boy wearing a beret climbs on his knees. In the background, a very young child and a nanny stand in front of an open chest. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "in this profession, the features of these children grew thicker, their voices altered; they mediocrely flattered the self-esteem of the mother, who tried to correct them from their bad habits by a rigor that that of the father converted into tenderness. They were left to run around in the courtyards, stables and outbuildings of the inn, or trotting through the city; they were sometimes whipped; sometimes they were sent to their grandfather auffray, who loved them very little.
