iconographic description:
illustration for victor hugo's novel "notre-dame de paris". Historical commentary:
the painting by antoine etex, dated 1851, simply titled "la gitana" presents all the iconography of the figure of esmeralda: the djali goat, the tambourine, the short skirt, the silhouette of notre-dame de paris in the background. It was lithographed by célestin nanteuil for the magazine “l’artiste” where it was published in the 5th series, volume 9, 6th issue, of october 13, 1852. The engraving is accompanied by a brief commentary: “antoine etex is not only a skilled sculptor; he is also a painter, and his style is linked to the best traditions of french art. In his gitana, he knew how to combine simplicity with character. »
