Funada Nyūdō Yoshimasa Grappling with Sachūjō Nitta Yoshisada in Midair, Yoshitoshi, 1886

Cole collection (m. 84. 31. 89) japanese art 宙を飛ぶ新田義貞とその重臣の船田義昌。義貞は、増水した天竜川に浮き橋を架けて全軍を渡らせたが、最後に義貞と義昌が渡っている最中に浮き橋の綱が切れ、とっさに義貞は義昌を抱えて二人で跳び、対岸へたどり着いた。家臣思いの義貞と二人の息の合った絆の強さを表した一作。 nitta yoshisada(1301-1338) threw a floating bridge over a swollen river to let his troop escape from the enemy. When yoshisada and his senior vassal funada yoshimasa were crossing over the bridge, the rope broke suddenly. Instantly yoshisada held yoshimasa and both jumped to the opposite shore. Date: 1886.
