In this scene, she is suspiciously reading a looking at a letter for clues, while on the right, the narrator's wife (mrs. Garrett's niece), who believes her husband's lie, looks on concerned that mrs. Garrett may be deranged because she keeps searching for her husband. Date: 27 June 1863.
