inscription - on the front, in brown ink: "some details on the tour de bourgogne whose entrance is rue du petit-lion st. Sauveur / no. 23 (former no. 3 of rue pavé) located between rue st. Denis and rue montorgueil, a short distance from rue turbigo. / situated at the bottom of a square garden, this quadrangular tower is in every way remarkable. Enclosed in modern buildings that it exceeds / of a very arid sloping roof. In ogive which occupied the majority of it, no longer exists. The staircase is intact with its wide stone steps turning around a column, with its square doors with moldings, with its windows similar to loopholes. / in the general appearance of the tower there is a date; in the ornamentation of the ceiling of the staircase there is a whole story. / on the capital of the column which serves as the core of the staircase is a / tub surrounded by three double rings; the stems of a vigorous oak / jut out from it and their abundant foliage lines the entire vault, describing the ribs of four bays of ribs. Nothing more bizarre / but also nothing more elegant. / if there were no other emblem we could imagine ourselves in one of the / hotels that louis duke of orléans, brother of charles vi, owned in paris; / and where he had carved gnarled sticks everywhere. / but if we look a little, we see inside, carved in the / ogival tympanum of one of the bays, two planes emblems of john the fearless, duke of burgundy. These planes meant that, sooner or later, he would smooth out the knotty sticks of the duke of orléans. The nocturnal assassination of 23 9. Ber 1407 proved that this was not an empty threat. / this tower, a sort of observatory, adjoining his hotel, from where jean / could monitor the parisian people, leaned against the wall of / paris and could flank it. The hotel was called indifferently / hôtel d'artois or hôtel de bourgogne. "
