One of the early genre paintings by viktor vasnetsov does not seem to foreshadow the fairy-tale and epic compositions of his subsequent work, such as "alyonushka" or "three bogatyrs". The russo-turkish war of 1877-1878 caused a patriotic upsurge in russian society, a desire to liberate the bulgarians from the turkish yoke. The turkish fortress of kars was taken by storm by russian troops under the command of general i. D. Lazarev after a long siege on the night of november 6 (18), 1877. This was an important episode of the war. The plot of the painting is detailed and easy to "read": a government message about the fall of the kars fortress is published in the newspapers, the news of the victory of the russian troops is hotly discussed by tavern regulars and random passers-by. The innkeeper, in patriotic zeal, hoists a flag on his establishment, a retired soldier helps him. An old woman wipes away her tears. Adults and children are captivated by this event. The painting was first shown at the 6th exhibition of the itinerants (1878). Object Type: painting. Date: 1878. Dimensions: 80 х 66 см. Известие о взятии Карса
