F. M. Slavyansky (?) peasant girl. 1840s oil on canvas. 33. 5 x 24 posted in 1981 by m. V. Kostylev, leningrad state russian museum zh-10327 fyodor slavyansky was one of the last students of a. G. Venetsianov, the founder of russian realism. Following the teacher’s instructions, the students of venetsianov’s school worked from life. Their models were usually peasants, townspeople of the bourgeoisie or merchant class. In the portrait of the girl, the artist truthfully reflects her appearance. The artist is as keenly interested in details as her face: the earrings, the knot of her headscarf, and the folds of her clothes are carefully and lovingly painted. The painting represents a kind of “small genre”; similar works of “cabinet” format depicting “characteristic heads” were very popular among russian art lovers. Date: 1840s.
