St. Ansgar stands between two columns supporting a round arch on a brown and white checked floor against a blue background, the color of the sky. He wears a choir robe, vestments and alb, as well as the insignia of his episcopal dignity - a bishop's staff, mitre and pontifical gloves with several finger rings. The model in his hand is reminiscent of the first church that ansgar had built in the hammaburg area. To his left the founder is kneeling. The banner above his head reads: "johan middelman prebo(situs) ob(iit) 1457". The x-rays made old texts legible again under the "new color". It was thus possible to reconstruct that the black and gold border of the picture was originally red and bears a text running around it (from latin into german): "in the year of our lord 1457 on the eve of the birth of christ the venerable magister johan middelman, provost of this church, died. May his soul rest in peace. Amen. " the panel also served as an epitaph for the deceased. He had also written the message on his banner: “ora pro me beate pater anscharius” (pray for me, blessed father ansgar). Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1457.
