Les plaisir du mènage [sic, correct french would be les plaisirs du ménage, "the joys of domestic life"], a sarcastic 1781 caricature by james gillray on the miseries of marriage. A wife brandishes her fist at her husband in a room with plaster peeling from the walls, amidst six squabbling and noisy children. The husband's trousers hang from the wall, instead of his hat, as an indication of who "wears the pants". For a caricature from the same period expressing the opposite point of view, see file:married-state-ca1780. Jpg. Date: 1781.
