Antonio Valdes and Fernandez Bazan, Rafael Tejeo, 1828

Portrait of the spanish sailor antonio valdés y fernández bazán (1744-1816), who was captain general of the royal spanish navy and also secretary of state and of the universal navy office. This work, which is a copy possibly made in 1828 by rafael tejeo from an original from around 1788, entered the naval museum of madrid in 1844, from the secretariat of the navy, and was restored in 1993. Furthermore, the sitter appears standing and wearing the large uniform of a squad leader of the royal spanish navy, along with the cross and scallop of a knight of the order of malta, although the three stripes he wears on the cuffs of his uniform and which were exclusive to the general directors of the navy, were added by the copyist in 1828.
