The large mansion house on the west side of southwark high street is suffolk house, town house of charles brandon, 1st duke of suffolk, 1st viscount lisle (c. 1484-1545). Now borough high street, it was the main thoroughfare from london bridge and the city of london to canterbury and dover, as taken by monarchs and by the pilgrims in chaucer's pilgrim's progress.
