Braddock's grave
by paul weber, 1855
following his defeat at the battle of monongahela, general edward braddock
died of his wounds near the ruins of fort necessity on july 13, 1755. He was buried in
the road to protect his body from desecration by trailing enemy forces. In 1804, road workers found what were presumed to be his
remains, which were moved nearby and interred under the tree painted by weber. In 1913, a more permanent marker was placed at the
site that still stands there today.
