1839 Early Group Portrait Photo by Draper

This photo is believed to have been made by john william draper in december 1839. It is one of few extant daguerreotypes so early where the subjects had to close their eyes to due to bright light needed for the exposure. On the right is possibly william henry goode, drapers assistant. In the middle is probably dorothy catherine draper (1807 - 1901), sister of john william draper who would later be photographed by him in early 1840. The identity of the woman remains on the left remains unknown. The image was hand-colored, presumably by dorothy draper. It is speculated that this image was sent as a sort of christmas token to their family far away in virginia, where it was discovered many years later. Date: Probably December 1839.
