Congress column (brussels) with the statue of king leopold i of belgium at the top. — the congress column in brussels is a commemorative column designed by the architect joseph poelaert. It was built on the initiative of charles rogier, between 1850 and 1859. Inspired by trajan's column, it commemorates the national congress of 1830-1831 which drafted the belgian constitution. The column, with a total height of 47 metres, is topped by a 4. 70 metres high statue of the first king of the belgians, leopold i, the work of the sculptor guillaume geefs (1805-1883). The base is engraved with the main dates of independence, the names of the members of the congress and those of the members of the provisional government formed after the belgian revolution, as well as the main principles of the constitution.
