The baptism of christ is depicted, with angels at right and men removing their clothes at left. A reproduction of the fresco by giovanni francesco penni in the 13th arcade of the vatican logge (often referred-to as “raphael’s bible”). Date: around 1518. School: roman. Dimensions of print: height: 197 millimetres; width: 385 millimetres. For a long time the fresco was believed to be by giulio romano but scholars are now convinced that it was by penni. The british museum has a related pen and brown ink drawing which is inscribed on the back "stupendo disegno di propria mano di raffaèle d'urbino dipinto in roma nelle loggiè vaticane" and bowyer himself would have no doubt regarded the fresco as by raphael.
