Map of Tartary, Thibet, and China, 1851

A map of manchuria, mongolia, and xinjiang ("tartary"), tibet ("thibet"), and china proper ("china") with idiosyncratic romanizations of names and a thick black line tracing the route of the lazarist missionaries huc and gabet on their visit to tibet from 1844 to 1846. Note that this line is incorrect, following the mistaken 1st edition map which assumed huc had taken the grand canal north and misplaced the northeast beginning point of the journey. Both were corrected in the 1853 2nd edition. The yellow river is shown still following its southern course, prior to the massive floods of the early 1850s. Shanghai is omitted as still smaller and less important than hangzhou ("hong-chew"), suzhou ("sou-chew"), and songjiang ("song-kyang", entirely misplaced to the northeast). From an original in the french edition of the text, reprinted from an 1840 map by auguste-henri dufour, with anglicized forms of the chinese names and omission of northern mongolia, japan, and most of korea.
