The work represents saint francis of assisi, the founder of the franciscan order, being in the presence of al-kamil, sultan of egypt. Saint francis, along with other companions, made an evangelizing trip through eastern lands in the year 1219. During their trip they were taken prisoner by the saracens and taken before the presence of sultan al-kamil, in front of whom the saint of assisi preached the christian message. And it should be added that this work is a preparatory sketch for the canvas of the same name painted by its author for the series of the life of saint francis of assisi in the royal basilica of saint francis the great in madrid.
