Queen Mary I enthroned and flanked by angels, Levina Teerlinc, 1553

Mary on the plea roll, court of king's bench, 1553. At least theory, courts were held in the presence of the monarch, the beginning of the first roll, or record, of each law term visually depiting that presence. The image for her first law term, michaelmas 1553, shows her borne by angels to the throne. She sits unter the dove of peace and her crowntopped royal arms while northumberland surrenders and is led awey on the lower right. Date: 1553.
