a thin man in a threadbare suit presents himself, hat in hand, in front of an elegant man seated nonchalantly in an armchair. In the background, a man with wide eyes and a smile on his lips examines the poor guest. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: " -- expect to read the name of my poor cousin one day in the article courts. In this, as before, she went too far in her revenge. She had aroused victorin's caution. Victorin had resolved to put an end to this sword of damocles, incessantly shown by lisbeth, and to the female demon to whom her mother and the family owed so much misfortune the prince of wissembourg, who knew the conduct of madame marneffe, supported the lawyer's secret enterprise, he had promised her, as promised by a president of the council, the hidden intervention of the police to enlighten crevel, and to save an entire fortune from the clutches of the diabolical courtesan to whom he forgave neither the death of marshal hulot, nor the total ruin of the councilor of state.
