Rajah, Henri Meunier, 1897

Worn by a large number of sovereigns of southeast asia, the title of rajah contains an evocative power that did not escape this coffee distributor from the end of the 19th century, who did not hesitate to play on it in order to increase the attractiveness of his product. In this lithographed advertising poster, the belgian henri meunier uses an ornamental vocabulary influenced by the art nouveau that was then triumphant, notably in the curves of the smoke wisps escaping from the cup, as well as in the curvy lettering announcing the name of the coffee. But it is above all the closed eyes of a princess with jet-black hair, her jewels and arm adornment, as well as her tiara, which contribute to creating an oriental atmosphere recalling the exotic origin of the product. Tasting rajah coffee thus sounds, in a fantasized vision, like a beautiful promise of escape. - municipal library of lyon, posted on numelyo. Date: 1897. Place of creation: Bruxelles.
