A woodblock print depicting a scene from the fourth act of a popular kabuki play. The shogun has sent an envoy (right) to lord enya hangan, ordering that as punishment for his rash behavior in attacking moronao, hangan must take his own life. Hangan declares his regret that he had not killed the man. "i vow that i shall be born and die, again and again, until at last i am avenged. " published as a set of twelve (12) prints titled kanadehon chushingura, oban size, engraved by nakamura kamazo. Date: between 1855 and 1869 (late Edo). Place of creation: Osaka, Japan.
