Plate of funerary monuments chosen from the cemeteries of paris. “the picturesque view offered on our frontispiece must be considered a free imitation of one of the sites of the eastern cemetery. On the foreground we have placed the monuments erected to david, girodet, swebach, painters; raymond de sèze, peer of france; méhul, musician, thibault, architect; berwic, engraver; lafitte, designer; bernardin de saint-pierre, ney, prince of moscow; on the second level, those of picard and his family, talma, vivant denon, hallé, doctor. With the exception of the horizontal stone which we have dedicated to the memory of ney, because his tomb is only covered with simple grass surrounded by a grid, all the monuments engraved here are copied exactly; it is not the same for those of valenciennes, landscaper; parny, millevoye, poets; chalgrin, architect; ménageot, painter; dejoux, sculptor; prud’hon, géricault, prévost, painters, and that of abbé sicard, teacher of the deaf and mutes, placed on the last plane. Almost all of these men, more famous than fortunate, having only a simple tombstone on their tomb in the eastern cemeteries, we believed it our duty to remember their names by means of these monuments of our invention. ».
