Caption: sabine lepsius: stefan with sabre, 190/1902, oil on canvas, 66x60cm, inscription bottom left: sabine lepsius, family property berlin note: stefan lepsius was named after the poet stefan george, who was a very good friend of sabine lepsius, her brother botho graef and her husband reinhold lepsius. Stefan lepsius was killed in world war i - eight days later his uncle botho graef died of heart failure in oskar kohnstamm's sanatorium. Sabine lepsius attributes this death to the grief over the loss of her nephew. She writes this in her book 'stefan george - history of a friendship'. After her son's death, she sought out stefan george at georg bondis' house and asked him for help - he responded with a handshake. Date: 1902/1903.
