iconographic description:
in this street scene, two young women with sheep's heads walk holding each other's arms. One of them is very frightened by the man with the head of a goat who follows them. This one carries a cane and his hat in his hand, he seems unattractive. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "this goat, this notary, this runner, this gallantine, as you please, truly excelled at following women, and he told us that that was his whole spirit, his whole vocation. [. . . ] it's odious! it's awful! it's grotesque! but what is certain is that we will follow women in all times. It seems fair to me to add that there will be, in all times, women who will ask nothing better than to be followed. "
