Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-05-05) letter no. 169 (1943-05-30) next letter (1943-06-16) [that was a hello when i got there] the lads had all run out of smokes. I was up front for one night and then went back again. I was supposed to ride but i want to tell you about the drama. Our company had got two new bicycles. I reported to the sergeant major in the rear. He wanted to make me happy and said i should take a bike. I said "yes, sir", take the bike, it was brand new, i rode about 50 m when there was a bang and the air went out of the front wheel. I looked to see if i had hit a nail or shrapnel, but there was nothing to see. I take the wheel off and when i see the tube i think i've hit the jackpot - there was a 15cm long tear in it - the tube has burst! now take it to the mechanic - they've got no picking equipment or spare tubes! as i'm standing there, the "spit" suddenly comes along. I think, well, now i'll do something. I'll tell him what's happened and he just laughs and says, "well, my dear hans, now you'll just have to walk. " i was speechless, so i just "hatched" [hatschen = long, strenuous walk (austrian)]. Otherwise i'm doing great, healthy and cheerful. I've got a good appetite, and i can satisfy it. Have the big pictures arrived yet? my dear mum, just stay healthy and everything will be ok. Greetings and kisses from the bottom of my heart, your hansl. A little floral greeting from afar. Date: 30 May 1943.
