In the photo we see 2nd lt. Józef byszewski (born 1892, died after 1939), a young cavalry officer of the 2nd brigade of the polish legions, commander of the 3rd platoon of the 3rd squadron of the 2nd uhlan regiment of the polish legions. Józef byszewski served in the 2nd regiment until february 19, 1918, when the regiment was liquidated. After poland regained independence, he joined the polish army. Later he fought in the polish-bolshevik war, commanding, as a captain, the 3rd division of the 4th mounted rifle regiment. In 1923 he was promoted to the rank of cavalry major. He served in the 4th mounted rifles regiment until 1924, then he served in the 9th and 24th uhlan regiments. In 1931 he retired. The photo was taken in april 1916 in czewel, a volhynian village located near kowel. Date: April 1916.
