Howard Pyle - Nude woman playing lyre ppmsca.05872, Howard Pyle, between 1880 and 1910

Illustration shows a nude young woman, strategically covered by her long dark hair, standing on a rock, holding a lyre. Two skulls lie on the rocks behind her. Below her, a drowning man in the waves clutches at her feet. The young woman is probably the lorelei, a german siren who sang songs of unbearable sweetness and lured sailors to their deaths on the rocks of the rhine river. Drawing: ink over graphite underdrawing; 34. 3 x 16 cm (sheet). Date: between 1880 and 1910.
