Initially considered to be the work of gregório lopes (santos, 1950), martin soria will attribute it to a painter known as mestre de são quintino, a disciple of gregório lopes (soria, 1957). Through the studies of joaquim oliveira caetano (caetano, 1988-93; 1993), the master of são quintino is identified as diogo de contreiras, who would have painted this panel for the altarpiece in the main chapel of the church of the monastery of são bento de cástris (évora), in 1546. This altarpiece would also include the "martírio das onze mil virgens", which is kept in the museu da sé de évora. After the extinction of the monastery of são bento, the painting entered the collection of the public library of évora which, on march 1, 1915, was transferred to the évora museum. It is also worth noting that, in addition to the restoration interventions mentioned in the respective field of this inventory sheet, the painting underwent a previous restoration, in 1952, in the restoration workshops of the national museum of ancient art, having been presented at the 5th painting restoration conference.
