Vicente carducho: colossal head of a man
the curious thing about this head is its size. It is 246 cm tall, much taller than a man of normal height, and is therefore about 8 times larger than a real head. The painter is vicente carducho (c. 1576-1638), an artist born in italy who worked at the court of philip iv where he was a great rival of diego velázquez. Perhaps it is the colossal portrait of a true giant (although not of this size) and corresponds to the interest that the 17th century showed in people with physical abnormalities such as dwarfs, bearded women and giants. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 16th century. Dimensions: height: 246 cm (96.8 in) ; width: 205 cm (80.7 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado.
