Rudolf åkerblom, view from katajanokka no. 1. Watercolour. Buildings on ankkurikatu and kruunuvuorenkatu, in the centre of the peninsula. Nikolainkirkko (now the helsinki tuomiokirkko cathedral) looks out regally above the end of what was then kauppakatu. Rudolf åkerblom deliberately painted scenes which chronicle the changing city. A number of the views in his watercolours are the same as those photographed by signe brander. Some of his most famous works are those with katajanokka as the subject. They were painted in the 1870s but provide information on the buildings situated on the outskirts of the city in the 1700s. At the time, the area plan for katajanokka was still under development, with the wood buildings - which had become slums - making way for stone houses. Object Type: painting. Date: 1872.
