Aquarium manager hjalmar östergren is squatting outside the east indian house (currently gothenburg's city museum). Beside him on the ground he has the alligator "smilet". The photograph was taken in 1924 when "smilet" was about three years old. The east indian house housed the aquarium's animals from 1924 and a few years later, after the aquariums and animals were bought by the jubilee exhibition in 1923 and before moving into the current museum building on karl johansgatan in majorna.
