D. ” [jean-jacques grandville, designer, and auguste desperet, lithographer] inscription - an inscription on the saddle of louis-philippe's horse: "chart […] e [charte] // verite", allusion to one of his speeches in which he announced that under his reign, the charter would henceforth be a truth. A ribbon unrolls from a spool carried by a town sergeant and is hung on the king's frock coat. We can read relative pronouns, which are recurrent in the king's speeches, according to the caricature: “qui que…. Whose”, “who what…. Whose”, “whoever”, “whom who”. This is a reserve of words for the speeches that the king will have to make during his visit. Furthermore, grandville, by materializing these words in a reel, highlights the fact that these speeches are not even written by the king himself and are delivered automatically. The horse bears the monogram “n” on its hindquarters surmounted by a crown. Iconographic description: pl. N°3 and 4 of the journey of immutable thought through eager populations. See pl. N°1 and 2 (pl. 324-325 of number 155) and pl. Nos. 5 and 6 (pl. 328-329 of number 157); description, analysis: louis-philippe is on horseback. The head seen from three quarters back, he is recognizable by his sideburns and his forelock. He is decorated with the cord of the legion of honor. Behind him, in the saddle, hang a hat decorated with the tricolor cockade and an umbrella. In front of him, smug-looking municipal officials present agent dishes, one containing the keys to the city, the other hearts topped with a flame. The king, nicknamed "immutable thought", is surrounded by "vice-thought" (the duke of orléans) on horseback, "and behind is unanimous love in the form of police officers" (in explanation). At the extreme left, a town sergeant threatens a woman with his fist because she is carrying a dish containing pears. The man then sees it as a mockery directed against the monarch, traditionally caricatured as a pear. At the extreme end, a farmer, accompanied by a child, places his hands on the back pockets of his pants "by an instinctive movement, as it is prudent to do in the midst of all eager populations, because of the thieves for whom the passage of an immutable thought serves no less as a pretext, than the passage of a giraffe, or the parades of bobêche" (in explanation). Person / character depicted: louis-philippe i, king of the french; orléans, ferdinand-philippe d', duke mode of acquisition: retrospective registration date of acquisition: 20–02–2013 institution: maison de balzac. Date: En 1833.
