Turlupin surreptitiously stealing from gaultier-garguille, while a woman speaks with gros-guillaume. On either side of the stage, a frenchman and a spaniard. Frame made of scrolls. Historical commentary: the hôtel de bourgogne, whose name is mentioned by bosse in a cartouche, inscribed in the architectural decor, was from 1548 the most important parisian theater scene until the creation of the comédie-française. The place was first used by the brotherhood of the passion who performed the sacred mysteries there. Italian actors then came to present plays with a very different character. However, it was from the 1620s, when the king's company established itself there, that the hôtel de bourgogne became a truly prestigious place. This success is due to the quality and originality of certain actors. Turlupin steals gaultier-garguille, a fashionable woman speaks to gros-guillaume with a floured face. These three actors of popular jokes, masked like the actors of the commedia del arte, supervised by a fashionable frenchman and a spaniard, were very well known between 1620 and 1630. Turlupin is henri legrand (1587-1637), gaultier, hugues guéru (1573-1633), and gros-guillaume, robert guérin (1554-1634). The hôtel de bourgogne (near the jean sans fear tower) was transformed into a theater and the brotherhood of the passion played sacred mysteries there until 1548, then farces. Attributed to italian actors then to the king's company from 1626, it had gros-guillaume as director.
