An extremely experimental printmaker along the lines of rembrandt, seghers demonstrated that a great painter could expand the limits of a medium to suit his expressive needs. He created 54 etchings, but instead of producing standardized editions, he made each impression a unique and individualized work of art. He often printed on paper prepared with a colored ground or on cloth using various colored inks and then added translucent overlays of color. Cleveland’s etching is one of ten known impressions of the first state; another is nearby at the allen memorial art museum at oberlin college. Date: 1623. Place of creation: Netherlands, 17th century. Dimensions: Platemark: 10.7 x 19 cm (4 3/16 x 7 1/2 in.). Medium: etching print, watercolor. Collection: Cleveland Museum of Art. Clevelandart 1951.349
