"the valperga castle of masino hosts a large number of portraits of gentlemen or gentlewomen: among them it seems possible to provisionally identify series on the basis of iconographic analogies, eras, artistic culture and also the frames, which testify to a desire to somehow unify certain sets with respect to others. The series identified here can iconographically be traced back to the models of the "beautiful women" portrayed by j. F. Voet, in rome between 1663 and 1679, for carlo emanuele ii, lorenzo onofrio colonna and flavio chigi, (similar series are also due to mellan and paul mignard, the latter in the pinacoteca del castello sforzesco in milan, in fact, most of the portraits have been traced back to voet's style, with the exception of two (cards 0100048682 and 0100048706), whose author appears to belong to the french cultural sphere. The subjects are only partially identified; the frames, although not identical (of five different types), are very similar and of a similar cultural context. On the "beautiful women" series, see michela di macco, picture gallery of the palace and court painters. The ducal choices from 1630 to 1684, in "figures of the baroque in piedmont, turin, 1988, in which the collection of carlo francesco di masino is expressly cited; michela di macco, il portrait and the symbolic homage, in "diana trionfatrice", turin, 1989; a. Brejon de lavergnée, deux portraits de jacob ferdinand voet, in "la revue du louvre et des musées de france", 1983. Masino's series was also recently cited by petrucci in "arte lombarda" n° 129, 2000" [1]. Date: circa 1675-1699. Dimensions: height: 67 cm (26.3 in); width: 55 cm (21.6 in). Medium: oil on canvas.
