iconographic description:
genre scene. Exterior scene: paris, porte saint-denis, architecture, triumphal arch, water tower. Characters: a water carrier, wearing a large hat, carrying a barrel under his arm and a bucket, stands near a woman paying the coconut seller (refreshing drink made from liquorice juice in lemon water) for the glass that her child is drinking. This wanderer is recognizable by the fountain he carries on his back and the cups attached to the straps. A bell, hanging from the fountain pipe, allows him to signal his arrival. The fountain is topped by a woman waving a flag. Alongside this group, a chimney sweep and a cake seller from nanterre stopped near a lemonade house. “bonne / nouvelles / nanterre” is written on the merchant’s basket. In the background, several carts loaded with large barrels wait to be filled with water. One of them bears the number “206” and the information “purified water”. A dog stands near the cart. Another, passing under the arch, is loaded with a barrel bearing the inscription "big[. . . ] / pj ang[. . . ]esseur". Two men climbed onto the roof of the water tower to fill a barrel while another helped them downstairs. A man pulls a handcart. The triumphal arch is decorated with lion sculptures, weapon trophies and a male water deity. Early 19th century fashion, headdresses and hats, small trades, cries of paris.
