A solitary man sits on gnarled roots and plays the flute. Contrary to first impressions, this is not an uninhabitable place but a retreat of some sort; at the upper right there is a wall and a tall fence. Beyond the man, a cliff-face is rendered primarily by the white of the paper. Date: between 1860 and 1880. Place of creation: Shanghai, China. Dimensions: height: 34 cm (13.3 in); width: 36.5 cm (14.3 in). Medium: ink and color on paper. Collection: Walters Art Museum. Ren Bonian - Playing the Flute - Walters 35101C
